Clever Grethel（対訳・英語勉強中）
“If he does not make haste,” cried Grethel to her master, “I must take them away from the fire; it’s pity and a shame not to eat them now, just when they are done to a turn.”
Clever Grethel
「お客が急がないのならば、肉を火から遠ざけるべきです。出来立てを食べられないのは残念ですから」
And the master said he would run himself and fetch the guest.
Clever Grethel
雇い主が言いました。自分が急いでお客を連れてくると。
As soon as he had turned his back, Grethel took the fowls from before the fire.
Clever Grethel
雇い主が背を向けると、グレーテルは火の前から鶏肉を取り出しました。
“Standing so long before the fire,” said she, “makes one hot and thirsty, – and who knows when they will come! In the meanwhile I will go to the cellar and have a drink.”

「火の前に長くいると、暑くて喉が渇きます。彼らがいつ来るのか分かりません。それまでの間に、私はワイン貯蔵室に行って酒を飲むことにしましょう」彼女が言いました。
So down she ran, took up a mug, and saying, “Here’s to me!” took a good draught.
Clever Grethel
彼女は駆け下りて、マグカップを取って、「乾杯！」と言って飲みました。
“One good drink deserves another,” she said “and it should not be cut short;” so she took another hearty draught.
Clever Grethel
「美味しいお酒は手が止まりません」そういって、彼女はどんどん飲みました。
Then she went and put the fowls down to the fire again, and, basting them with butter; she turned the spit briskly round.

それから、彼女は鶏肉を再び火にかけました。そして、バターをぬって、焼き串を手際よくひっくり返しました。
And now they began to smell so good that Grethel saying, “I must find out whether they really are all right,” licked her fingers, and then cried, “Well, I never! The fowls are good; it’s a sin and a shame that no one is here to eat them!”
Clever Grethel
美味しそうな匂いがして、グレーテルが言いました。「本当においしいかどうか確かめなければなりません」彼女は指をなめて、それから叫びました。「驚いた！美味しい鶏肉です。これを食べないなんてとんでもない！」
