あらすじ
カーショーが受け取った手紙の一通目には、バーカーの困窮した状況が書かれていた。当時、裕福だったカーショーはバーカーに１０ポンド紙幣を贈った。
すると、カーショーが困窮したときに、二通目の手紙が届き、スメサーストの名前で５０ポンドが贈られたのだ。カーショーは成功していくスメサーストに脅迫文を送り、強請ることにした。しかし大富豪にとって、遠い他国からの脅迫は痛くもかゆくもなかっただろう。
