あらすじ

　最後の矢を放つとき、秀郷はムカデの弱点を思い出した。その大ムカデを普通のムカデと同様に扱っていいのか分からなかったが、彼は最後のチャンスに賭けることにした。

The warrior saw that he had now only one arrow left in his quiver, and if this one failed he could not kill the centipede.

MY LORD BAG OF RICE

　秀郷は気づきました。今や、矢筒に残った矢は一本だけだということに。
　もしもこの矢が上手くいかなかったとしたら、ムカデを退治することができないかもしれません。

He looked across the waters.

　秀郷は湖の向こう側を見ました。

The huge reptile had wound its horrid body seven times round the mountain and would soon come down to the lake.

MY LORD BAG OF RICE

　巨大ムカデはその巨体を山に七回巻き終えて、今にも湖にやってくるでしょう。

Nearer and nearer gleamed fireballs of eyes, and the light of its hundred feet began to throw reflections in the still waters of the lake.

　迫りくる眼球の発光と百本足の光の反射が、湖のないだ水面にその姿を反射しはじめました。

Then suddenly the warrior remembered that he had heard that human saliva was deadly to centipedes.

　その時突然、秀郷は思い出しました。人間の唾液がムカデにとって猛毒だと聞いたことがあると。

But this was no ordinary centipede.

MY LORD BAG OF RICE

　しかし、これは普通のムカデではありません。

This was so monstrous that even to think of such a creature made one creep with horror.

MY LORD BAG OF RICE

　人間に恐怖を抱かせるほどの、化け物のようなムカデなのです。

Hidesato determined to try his last chance.

MY LORD BAG OF RICE

　秀郷は最後のチャンスに賭けようと決意しました。

So taking his last arrow and first putting the end of it in his mouth, he fitted the notch to his bow, took careful aim once more and let fly.

　そして最後の矢を持ち、まず矢の先端を口にくわえて、秀郷は弓に矢をつがえて、もう一度慎重に狙いを定めて、矢を放ちました。
