あらすじ

 かつてイングランドの銀行は二枚の百万ポンド紙幣を発行したことがあった。そしてそのうちの一枚はまだ銀行に現存していた。
 少し前に、その紙幣が紳士たちの間で話題に上った。無一文の異邦人がその紙幣だけを持って30日間刑務所に入らず過ごせるかどうかという話題で、二人の考えは割れて言い争いになった。
二人の紳士はすぐにその話題で賭けを行い、賭けに適した人物を探していたのだ。

So they went on disputing till Brother B said he would bet twenty thousand pounds that the man would live thirty days, any way, on that million, and keep out of jail, too.
