あらすじ

 邪悪な魔女は、彼女の国に居る侵入者に気づいて腹を立た。彼女が首にかけた銀の笛を吹くと、そこら中からオオカミたちが集まってきた。集合したオオカミ達に対し、邪悪な魔女は侵入者を引き裂くよう命じた。

Now the Wicked Witch of the West had but one eye, yet that was as powerful as a telescope, and could see everywhere.

 西の邪悪な魔女は片目しかありませんでしたが、その眼は望遠鏡のように強力で、どこでも見ることができました。

So, as she sat in the door of her castle, she happened to look around and saw Dorothy lying asleep, with her friends all about her.

 彼女が自分の城の戸口に座っていた時、偶然見回して、ドロシーが眠っていることに気づきました。ドロシーの仲間たちも彼女の近くにいました。

They were a long distance off, but the Wicked Witch was angry to find them in her country; so she blew upon a silver whistle that hung around her neck.

 彼らは遠く離れていました。しかし邪悪な魔女は彼らが自分の国にいることに腹を立てました。それで彼女は自分の首にかけていたシルバーホイッスルを吹きました。

At once there came running to her from all directions a pack of great wolves.

They had long legs and fierce eyes and sharp teeth.

"Go to those people," said the Witch, "and tear them to pieces."

"Are you not going to make them your slaves?" asked the leader of the wolves.

「彼らを奴隷にしないのですか?」オオカミたちのリーダーが尋ねました。

"No," she answered, "one is of tin, and one of straw; one is a girl and another a Lion. None of them is fit to work, so you may tear them into small pieces."

 魔女が答えました。「一人はブリキ製で、一人は麦わらだ。一人は少女で、もう一人はライオンだ。誰も役に立たない。だから、お前がバラバラにしてよい」

"Very well," said the wolf, and he dashed away at full speed, followed by the others.
